2024 brings new classes, new approaches and a whole lot of delight!
In 2018 my husband's job relocated him to Europe from Australia. We were fortunate to spend over five years living in Northern Germany. While we didn't anticipate a global pandemic to throw a spanner in the works, it was an enriching and rewarding experience that none of us will ever forget. We made lifelong friends, experienced places I'd only ever read about and visited many more places that I'd never even heard of. Most importantly there was a chance for our family to appreciate what they have and develop a global perspective.
I was fortunate enough to be able to invest time in a sort of self-managed sabbatical. After completing a certificate in jewellery design I took to painting everyday, treating it as if it was a job. It sounds like a wonderful way to pass the time, but of course just like every job, there are days where nothing goes right or you're just not in the mood to be at your desk by 8am. On those days, when nothing flows after slogging away for hours doing the last thing you planned to be doing - like finding yourself staring at the epic scale of your failure manifested in a painting that is a complete disaster - a soothing career in flower arranging sounds like a perfect cup of tea, but of course that's not as easy as it looks either. Luckily I found a couple of communities, both online and in person, that made learning to paint less of a chore, offered support, sage advice and coping strategies that opened an intuitive and holistic approach to creating and growing for me, both as a person and as an artist.
So now that I am firmly back on home soil (bless), I'm looking forward to reigniting the excitement of working with contemporary clays. My studio is full of projects and samples that are waiting to be finished, and a few classes are already on my calendar. In view of my activities of the last two years, I've also began using paper in my practice, as well as continuing to sculpt and make dolls.
I know that this isn't a traditional website design and is possibly not what most people are expecting, but as an artist I used to spend too much time doing this kind of thing and not enough creating. I aim for that to be different in 2024. The word 'streamlining' my online presence really doesn't describe what I'm trying to achieve, rather 'condensing' fits nicely.
